Description:
This curriculum is designed to meet the challenges many UU RE
programs face: a wide age spread; hyperkinetic children; different
learning styles; a desire for RE not to feel like “Sunday
School”;
a shortage of RE volunteers, while at the same time embodying UU
principles and values in both content and methodology.
The
curriculum draws on the strengths of Montessori and Waldorf teaching
methods, Sand Tray Play, Non-Violent Communication (NVC), Jerome
Barrymore’s “Godly Play,” and current trends in
environmental education. The curriculum works with any age group from
pre-school to adults. It employs stories from a variety of faith,
wisdom and folk traditions that explore themes, values, and holy days
as a means of helping learners engage in self-discovery.
Through
the re-telling of stories and creative explorations using
theatre/divuppetry, music, art, and spiritual practice, participants of
all ages learn more about the world and themselves—as they make
connections, deepen relationships, and develop a clearer
understanding of self and how they wish to live in the world. Built
into the curriculum are elements such as a juice ceremony and a
sharing circle that naturally cultivate respect, and a peace table
that equips children to resolve conflicts without adult intervention.
The values of peace, mutual respect and nonviolence also undergird
the environmental education component which integrates the stories
and creative explorations with building and caring for miniature
ecosystems (terrariums, greenhouses, gardens).
